Wedding guests use to be given small bags of rice to throw at the bride and groom as a tradition, but it was soon discovered that this was not a good thing for birds that came to munch after the festivities. Now the tradition is to give bags of birdseed instead. Munch away little birds! Birdseed packets can be made with a square of fine-mesh tulle bundled around a small portion of wild bird seed and tied with raffia or satin ribbon. You may also want to attach a personalized note to your guests with a heart charm or any other favorite charm to reflect your theme.
Other items to fill mesh tulle with are candy, chocolate kisses, Jordan Almonds or a favorite choice candy of the bride and groom.
Check out your local craft stores or dollar tree to see what items you can purchase in quantity. Sometimes you can get small glass vases, candle holders, tins or cardboard boxes or small pails which you can decorate to compliment your wedding theme and colors. These items can also be filled with candy, potpourri, or small soaps to give as gifts.
For my wedding my girls carried lace fans with a flower arrangement attached to the front. I found these adorable little white plastic lace looking fans in a craft party store. I purchased a large quantity and made my own favors by attaching candy in wrapped in mesh tulle and satin ribbon and flowers with a hot glue gun. They were a big hit with my guests.
